2011 NFL Lockout Watch

Polled Fans Ready to Work on Trucks

Published in the July 2011 Issue July 2011 Ask The Expert

In April, Sports Illustrated contracted an independent marketing-research firm, M&RR, which polled 314 randomly selected self-described NFL diehards, ages 18 years and older, on how they viewed the ongoing labor dispute and what a football-less fall might look like. The study breaks down everything from who's to blame (55.3 percent said both owners and players) to what other sports would you follow more closely if a strike did occur (college football at 57.3 percent). But one popular response further explains our nation's love of trucks.

When asked if the 2011 NFL season was canceled, what would you do with the money you might have spent on game tickets, fantasy fees and/or pay-TV packages? One of the top responses was "fix up my truck," which seemed like a better reply than "buy more video games" or "take a vacation."

Hopefully the chances for a 2011 season are a little more optimistic than the 53 percent that said yes, but if not it just means we'll all have a little more time this fall to work on our truck upgrades.
