As readers of the magazine may have noticed, as part of the build process on Project Date Night, our current project truck, we used a product called Durabak to coat the engine bay and the underside of the truck. The specific product we used is called Durabak-18. According to Ray Grimme, owner of Durabakstore.com, “Durabak is an indoor material, and Durabak-18 is a UV/chemical protected material to be used on outdoor or chemical sealing, like secondary or short term primary containment area for industrial spills.” Durabak and Durabak-18 have a ASTM E84 fire rating, but when you add the DBK powder to it to mix into the Durabak-18 for the wheel wells, and engine area, it adds a much higher fire protection ability to include no flame traveling and flame containment. Ray continues, “This is very important information if you have a brake fire or a gas line break in an engine area that causes a fire. It adds time for escape from the truck cab or putting the fire out with common fire fitting equipment or chemicals.”
As if the nice, clean look weren’t enough of a reason for us to use it on the truck, we have that added protection. One other nice thing about Durabak-18 is that it dries fast enough that you can drive your vehicle the very next day; not that this truck is ready to drive any time soon!
