Let's see. trade my old truck in for a new one that's going to put me in the hole $40 grand-or invest in my old truck and get insane power?
Easy question.
Take a preview look at a feature we're working on for the next issue: You remember our '98 12-valve Cummins that we wrote about in last April's issue of Diesel Tech after having a little work done to it? Well, shortly after that article, we drove the truck back up to Dynomite Diesel Performance in Monroe, WA, and let them take it to the next level.
Keep in mind, this truck had a hard time cracking 200 rear-wheel horsepower when we first bought it, and that was with a few minor mods already having been done to it. Now our 12-valve features a DDP S300/S400 compound turbo kit, fire rings, valve springs and a worked over, race-ready p-pump. All of the details will be in the next issue, but as you can see from the dyno charts, we've more than tripled the power output. And there are few things as beautiful as the power curve of a compound turbo setup. Best of all, we haven't had to touch anything under the hood since we picked the truck up from DDP. If a 600-hp, 12-year-old truck is that reliable, it's just another reason why not to throw away a bunch of money on a brand new one.
