The heavy-duty pickup truck wars have ratcheted up again with Chrysler introducing a version of its Ram 3500 that it says will tow up to more than 11 tons of trailer.
The upgraded truck was introduced at the Chicago Auto Show with a 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel engine. The new engine increases torque by 23% to 800 foot-pounds and gets other upgrades that increase its gross tons, including cargo, to 30,000 lbs.
"A Ram Heavy Duty truck owner's most important concern is towing capability - 79% of them rate towing as extremely important," said Fred Diaz, Ram Truck brand CEO. "Reliability and engine performance are tied for second, named as extremely important by 73% of owners."
The truck gets a new higher-rated torque converter to improves engine and transmission integration for better towing capability going up hills.
In addition to what Ram says is the best towing capacity in its class, the Ram has the largest brakes of any heavy-duty pickup.
