At Diesel Tech Magazine, we spend a lot of time on the road … which means we see a lot of unique things, especially during the winter in the mountains. We can tell some interesting tales … but as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
So we’ve decided to test out the Rovi Prime Dashcam to see if perhaps we can share what we see with others. And if a picture is worth a thousand words, a video can be priceless.
Another great reason to have a Rovi dashcam is to have a source of documentation in case your vehicle is involved in an accident. There’s no better source of proof than actual video of whatever situation you may encounter.
The Rovi is a very inexpensive dashcam and extremely easy to install. It doesn’t take much time and requires no additional tools. You merely stick the base to your windshield, tuck away the cord and plug it into a power source. From there you can download an app and have access to your videos anytime you need.
You can set your recording time for 3, 5 or 10 minutes. After the set duration, the segment is saved and the recording will start again. (If you are set to 3 minutes and you go for a 30-minute drive, you will end up with 10 video segments.) As your memory card fills, it will over-write the oldest videos. However, you can choose to download or save any of the segments at any time. And if the camera senses a sudden stop and impact, that segment will be locked and protected.
Pros—Great quality video, easy to use, added security.
Cons—Micro SD Card sold separately, learning curve on video management, app not overly user-friendly.
For the value ($149), the Rovi Prime is a “must-have” accessory for any vehicle. And who knows? For the entertainment value, it may make you a social media sensation.
Installation
Install the Micro SD Card into your Rovi Prime Dashcam. (We picked up a SanDisk at Best Buy for about $16. Rovi recommends using only a Class 10 Micro SD Card.)
Find a place where the Dashcam has a clear view through the windshield without restricting the Driver’s view. (We found that right behind the rearview mirror tends to work best.)
Remove the adhesive tape from the Rovi mount and attach the mount to your windshield.
Plug the Rovi USB cable into your mount and then run your wires to your power source. (We went along the cab liner to the side of the windshield and then into the plastic trim until we dropped down to below the dash. Then we went under the dash and back through some plastic trim until we were within inches of the power source. When it was all completed, only about four inches of the cable was visible.)
Download the app to your phone. Sync your phone with the Rovi Wi-Fi. Now you’re ready to record.
