Truck Tech’s LT Tolman and Austin LeFort got their hands on a nice Duramax-powered GMC Sierra Denali 2500 HD crew cab pickup. They came up with a perfectly logical plan—to make big, emissions-legal power, then go drag racing. The truck put out an impressive 587 horsepower and 1,027 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels and an 8.91-second ET in the eighth-mile on street tires. Engine Combo
The LML Duramax was torn down for a complete rebuild. The factory rotating assembly was replaced with a Callies forged crankshaft, Oliver forged connecting rods, and a Mahle piston and ring set. A mechanical flat tappet cam and a pair of Edelbrock Duramax Diesel cylinder heads improve horsepower production. Summit Racing's combo has a COMP Cams LST camshaft (194°/209° duration at .050, .475/.475-inch lift). ARP main and cylinder head stud kits help keep things together when the boost gets turned up.
Fuel, Turbo, and Exhaust Combo
The Denali came from the factory with a high-pressure CP4 injection pump that can only support about 550 horsepower. Truck Tech added a FASS 250 gallon-per-hour lift pump to help the CP-4 pump more fuel; it also acts as a filtration system. On top of that, LT and Austin installed an ATS Twin Fueler kit with auxiliary CP-3 pump to add more fuel volume, and a set of custom Dymomite Diesel fuel injectors capable of supporting 1,000 horsepower.
The factory 60-millimeter turbo was replaced with a 67-millimeter G2 turbo; the Summit Racing combo includes a DuramaxTuner 64-millimeter Stealth turbo that can support 800 horsepower. A DuramaxTuner Spade Series programmer provides five stages of tuning. Other parts include a PPE exhaust manifold/up pipe kit, a Mishimoto intercooler, a Banks Ram-Air cold air intake, and an Edge Jammer exhaust system that retains the factory DPF system.
Completer Combo
Truck Tech added a set of Cal-Tracs traction bars to plant the rear axle, and a set of PPE Stage 3 tie rod assemblies to better resist the front tires’ tendency to toe-in under heavy acceleration. Other items include an ATI harmonic damper; Fel-Pro top-end and head gaskets; a pair of Optima YellowTop batteries; and set of Pacer Hi Five cab lights, just because.
